Anonymous Flower

by Julie
(Essex, England)

I have no idea what this flower is - I just thought it looked so stunning I had to have it!

It was taken outside a hotel in St Augustine, Florida last September. I remember thinking it was amazing that it looked so pristine just about 12 hours after a tropical storm.

The camera is a Kodak DX6490, which I inherited from a friend who graduated to a Canon EOS.

I certainly wish I'd had the tips on this site when I was taking pictures last year.

Does anyone know what it is? I'd love to identify it.

Hibiscus
by: Kimberly

This is a Hibiscus flower. The Hibiscus is considered a sub - tropical to tropical plant specimen. There are many different colors and you can view this gorgeous flower throughout the southern United States as well as the Caribbean, Central and South America. It is also well known in other warmer climates around the world. In zone seven in the United States, the Hibiscus is considered deciduous and will die out in the winter. Warmer climates the Hibiscus is an evergreen. A truly spectacular plant specimen!

Name for anonymous flower
by: Lesley

This looks like a hibiscus to me.

In Britain, they flower from August to October but in warmer climate they have a longer season.

My gardening book describes them as a "sumptuous" flower, which sums them up beautifully.

Hibiscus photo

Hi Julie,

I believe your flower is a Hibiscus. Gorgeous specimen, hard to believe it had just survived a storm isn't it?

My little point and shoot is a Kodak but it doesn't have a very close macro focus.

You took a great record shot that enabled identification, well done. The only distraction was the shadow of the pistils and stamens on the lower petals. I believe the colour changes from yellow to red, but it is hard to be sure due to the shadow.

Lovely saturated colour, good exposure and sharp focus. All in all a lovely shot.
