Bobby

by Amy
(Buxton, Derbyshire)

This was one of the first photographs I took with my new Canon 400D digital camera. I was so happy it came out so well. I set the dial to macro to get more detail in the foreground. I got down to Bobby's level and moved the camera in close so he filled most of the frame. I tried to leave out as much of the background as possible to stop it becoming a distraction. It was a beautifully sunny day so I had no concerns about light levels. I auto focused and snapped away!

Great dog photo
by: Carol

Amy you did a great job with your photo of Bobby. You did everything right!

Getting down to his level, especially with a small dog, is essential for a super portrait.

Nice idea to get close and use the macro setting, too. Because the depth of field is less with a macro setting you have managed to throw the distant grass out of focus concentrating the viewers attention on Bobby.

Its a shame part of one of his front legs is out of the frame, but I'm guessing to have managed to include it you may have had to lie flat on the floor. I know if this was my dog, at that point she would have leaped on top of me thinking it was time to play :)

The photo is nicely exposed, helped by the fact that most of Bobby's body is in the shade. A trick that might help if you take more photos of him is to use spot metering and focus on his white fur when it is in the shade and looks grey. Well done on a great portrait! Keep snapping.
