Early flowering snowdrops

Early flowering snowdrops

I took this picture last April but even though it's only early February there are already loads of snowdrops out here in Devon. I use a Nikon Coolpix camera and took this picture using the macro setting.

The banks of the lanes near my home are already smothered in pure white flowers. The green centres perfectly complementing the white petals and swordlike green leaves.

Snowdrops are a unique flower in that they can only be transplanted "in the green", that is to say, they need the leaves still on them if you want to move them to another situation.

One of the earliest harbingers of spring, Snowdrops are a beautiful reminder that longer days are coming very soon. I hope that you enjoy looking at them as much as I do.

Isn't nature wonderful?
by: Carol

It is great when mother nature lends a helping hand isn't it? Part of being a good photographer is in developing an "eye" for a great picture and when you can get a shot without having to contort yourself its really helpful!

Good capture.

Technical bits
by: Lesley

I took this photo last year, so I don't really remember exactly what settings I used.

The Nikon Coolpix 4200 is a really versatile little camera and the macro setting is excellent. I don't think that I zoomed in at all, just used the setting "as is".

It was very easy to get down to the level of these particular snowdrops because they're growing on a high bank so, they're actually at eye level and were very easy to photograph.

Spring is in the air!
by: Carol

I love to see the first snowdrops bloom beneath my rose bush in the front garden each year. They remind me that better weather is on the horizon.

You did a good job with your photo as these are tiny flowers and low to the ground. Well done for getting down to their level rather than taking the shot from above.

You also managed to get a lot of depth of field into your shot. Did you zoom out to a wide angle for this picture?

Well done and thanks for sharing and including lots of interesting information about the snowdrop on your page.
